L' église de Santa Maria dell'Itria, mieux connue sous le nom de La Pinta en raison de son cycle de peintures décoratives
La première église a été fondée au VIe siècle par le général byzantin Belisario, nommée Santa Maria dell'Annunciata della Pinta. C'était un lieu de culte de l'époque byzantine.
La reconstruction a eu lieu en 1390 et en 1583 a été publiée la représentation sacrée La Création du monde ou l'Incarnation du Verbe , écrite par le moine Teofilo Folengo, également appelée l'Acte de la Pinta .
En 1648, sur ordre du cardinal Teodoro Trivulzio, cette ancienne église, avec l'église de Santa Barbara la Soprana et l'église de San Giovanni la Calca , fut démolie pour faire place à deux grands bastions ("Porta di Castro") pour la défense du Palais Royal.
Depuis lors, l'archiconfrérie de la Pinta, qui avait sa résidence à cet endroit, a déménagé dans la nouvelle église de Santa Maria dell'Itria, qui s'appelait ainsi della Pinta, et a également transféré son titre, sa mission et son surnom à la place où elle a été localisé est.
