La place appelée Place de Clairefontaine se trouve au cœur de la ville de Luxembourg, entre la cathédrale Notre-Dame et la Chambre. À la fin des années 1980, la place a été réaménagée dans le cadre de travaux de restauration et de reconstruction importants dans le quartier environnant. Historiquement, on y trouvait la Rue de Clairefontaine, qui portait également le nom allemand de Badenburgerstrasse ou Bardenburgergasse, nommée d'après un refuge qui appartenait à l'ancienne abbaye de Clairefontaine près d'Arel et qui a été démoli en 1933.
