Les gorges de la formation rocheuse de Goldfralay ont été créées lorsque des blocs de grès luxembourgeois se sont détachés du plateau de grès le long de gorges parallèles. La couche argileuse de marl sous le grès collecte l'eau qui s'infiltre et permet aux blocs de grès de glisser et de basculer dans la vallée.
