Le petit village d'Esch-sur-Sûre - 250 habitants - se situe sur une espèce de presqu'île entourée par la Sûre. Il passe pour l'un des plus beaux villages du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Il est dominé par une tour tronquée et quelques vestige, du château médiéval (927). Le rocher semble sortir de la rivière. Esch resta longtemps un village isolé. Pour le désenclaver, un tunnel fut percé en 1850. Un second tunnel fut creusé en 1954 vers le barrage et le lac. Ce lac artificiel, érigé pour les besoins de l'alimentation en eau, est tellement intégré dans le paysage qu'il apparaît comme un caprice de la nature.
