Boxbergen a toujours été une puissante seigneurie et a été mentionnée pour la première fois en 1344 comme propriété de Hendrik van Dorth. La relation entre les propriétaires et la ville de Deventer, en particulier, n'a pas toujours été optimale. La maison a été détruite et reconstruite plusieurs fois. Après avoir changé de propriétaire à plusieurs reprises, le propriétaire actuel est la famille Nuy, qui l'a aménagée pour son haras, les terres étant gérées par la fondation IJssellandschap.
