Sur la place de Biervliet, vous trouverez la statue de la figure la plus importante de l'histoire de Biervliet : Willem Beukelszoon, qui a inventé en 1397 la méthode de préparer le hareng, une manière spéciale de nettoyer le poisson. Dans cette méthode, les branchies et les entrailles du hareng sont enlevées avec un couteau spécial, à l'exception du pancréas. Les enzymes du pancréas permettent au hareng de 'mûrir'.
