Au château de Doorwerth, le Musée de l'Armée néerlandaise était hébergé avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais cette collection a été transférée à Leyde en 1944. Pendant la bataille d'Arnhem, le château a été occupé par les Allemands et a été en grande partie détruit pendant l'hiver 44/45 par les bombardements des Alliés, mais finalement par les Allemands qui l'ont fait sauter.
Les Alliés étaient approvisionnés par des parachutages, mais parfois ceux-ci tombaient entre les mains des Allemands. (voir photo)
En 1949, après le début de la restauration, le Musée Airborne a été créé, qui a déménagé en 1978 dans l'emplacement actuel de l'ancien hôtel Hartenstein.
