In Kasteel Doorwerth was voor WO2 het Nederlands Legermuseum gehuisvest, maar die collectie is in 1944 naar Leiden verplaatst. Tijdens de Slag om Arnhem werd het kasteel door Duitsers bezet en werd in de winter van 44/45 grotendeels verwoest door beschietingen van Geallieerden, maar uiteindelijk door opblazen door de Duitsers.
De geallieerden werden met parachute-droppings bevoorraad, maar soms vielen die in Duitse handen. (zie foto)
In 1949, na het begin van de restauratie, werd er het Airborne Museum opgericht, dat in 1978 verhuisde naar de huidige locatie het voormalig Hotel Hartenstein.
