L'histoire de sa construction et de ses habitants remonte au Moyen Âge. Au fil du temps, des incendies, des guerres, des agrandissements et des embellissements ont modifié l'apparence du château. D'un château-fort médiéval, il s'est progressivement transformé en un beau palais. Le château abrite une importante collection d'art, principalement de la fin du Moyen Âge.
