Construit un jour pour améliorer l'accès au pays de Maas et Waal en direction de Tiel. Et comme la navigation sur la Waal devenait de plus en plus fréquentée, la liaison par bac entre Tiel et Wamel ne pouvait pas être étendue. En juin 1974, le pont a été inauguré et est rapidement devenu connu sous le nom de pont de « rien à nulle part ». Un prolongement prévu de la route vers Eindhoven n'a pas eu lieu. Jusqu'en 1996, un péage a été perçu. Le pont est le seul aux Pays-Bas ayant la même construction que le pont Morandi à Gênes, qui s'est effondré en 2018. Selon des experts, la construction en béton de ce pont à haubans est en excellent état !
