Jopie Huisman était un peintre autodidacte néerlandais et un colporteur. Au cours de sa vie, il est devenu connu pour ses peintures méticuleuses et réalistes. Huisman a refusé de vendre aucune de ses peintures. Le 11 avril 1986, Huisman a ouvert son propre musée. Jopie Huisman est né le 18 octobre 1922 à Workum, en Frise. En 1939, il est devenu peintre sur céramique à l'usine de faïence d'Aurora. En 1942, il a été arrêté lors d'un raid et envoyé travailler dans un camp de travail à Kassel, en Allemagne. Un jour, il regardait le ciel et pensa voir un groupe d'oies. Soudain, l'usine voisine s'est effondrée. Le bombardement de Kassel avait commencé. Huisman a réussi à s'échapper du camp et a trouvé refuge à Workum. En 1949, il a épousé Eelkje de Boer, a créé une entreprise et une famille.
