Avec l'expansion d'Eygelshoven en raison des mines de charbon, l'ancienne église Saint-Jean-Baptiste (la Petite Église) sur la colline de l'église est devenue trop petite et il y a eu un besoin d'une église plus grande.
En 1920, la construction de la nouvelle église a été lancée selon le design d'Alphons Boosten et Jos Ritzen de Maastricht. Cette église est un monument national depuis 2001.
