Med udvidelsen af Eygelshoven som følge af kulminerne blev den gamle Johannes Døberkirke (den lille kirke) på kirke bakken for lille, og der opstod behov for en større kirke.
I 1920 begyndte byggeriet af den nye kirke efter design af Alphons Boosten og Jos Ritzen fra Maastricht. Denne kirke har været en fredet bygning siden 2001.
