Con la expansión de Eygelshoven como resultado de las minas de carbón, la antigua iglesia de San Juan Bautista (la Pequeña Iglesia) en la colina de la iglesia se volvió demasiado pequeña y surgió la necesidad de una iglesia más grande.
En 1920 comenzó la construcción de la nueva iglesia, diseñada por Alphons Boosten y Jos Ritzen de Maastricht. Esta iglesia es un monumento nacional desde 2001.
