Con l'espansione di Eygelshoven a causa delle miniere di carbone, la vecchia chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (la Piccola Chiesa) sulla collina della chiesa divenne troppo piccola e ci fu bisogno di una chiesa più grande.
Nel 1920 iniziò la costruzione della nuova chiesa secondo il progetto di Alphons Boosten e Jos Ritzen di Maastricht. Questa chiesa è un monumento nazionale dal 2001.
