Jusqu'au 19e siècle, de nombreuses fermes dans la Krimpenerwaard avaient un champ où étaient cultivées des plants de chanvre. La plante, qui mesure plus de deux mètres de hauteur, est utilisée pour fabriquer notamment des cordes et des fils. Sur les bateaux qui avaient leur port d'attache dans la Krimpenerwaard, de nombreuses cordes et filets étaient naturellement utilisés, et la proximité de Rotterdam et de Gouda a également engendré une forte demande de cordes.
