Dans un virage serré de l'Escaut, à quatre kilomètres au nord du centre d'Anvers, se trouve le Fort Saint-Philippe. Alexandre Farnèse, le duc de Parme, l'a construit en 1584 avec le Fort Saint-Marie lors du siège d'Anvers. Avec ces deux « contre-forts », il voulait couper la ville des forts états-liens de Lillo et de Liefkenshoek. Entre les deux forts, il a également construit son impressionnant pont de navires. Après la chute d'Anvers, le Fort Saint-Philippe est resté d'une grande importance militaire, pour faire contrepoids à Lillo et à Liefkenshoek.
