Cadzand (autrefois Cadesand) fait partie des plus anciennes implantations de la Zélande belge. Il se trouvait sur une île près du Zwin, et était entouré d'une "kade" (digues). Lors des marées de tempête en 1394 et 1398 (inondation de Sainte Élisabeth), de grandes parties de l'"île de Cadzand" ont de nouveau disparu dans la mer et ont été réétayées.
Cadzand est un village circulaire de l'époque médiévale, les maisons étant concentrées autour de l'église (catholique) pré-gothique du début du XIVe siècle. L'église a été restaurée plusieurs fois et est devenue protestante au XVIIe siècle. C'est une "église hall" à deux nefs, où la transition du style roman au gothique est encore visible. Le grand clocher original a été démoli en 1677 et remplacé par un "clocheton" en bois. En 1930, l'actuel clocher élégant a été construit par la commune de Cadzand.
