Fort Altena a été construit en 1847 et fait partie de la Nouvelle Ligne d'Eau Hollandaise. Comme les sites stratégiques et les points faibles de la ligne qui ne pouvaient pas être inondés devaient être protégés, Fort Altena a été construit ici, entre autres pour pouvoir fermer la route Breda - Gorinchem et le Dijk d'Uppel. Il n'y a jamais eu de combats. Depuis 2003, le fort est la propriété du Paysage Brabançon. Celui-ci l'a rendu accessible aux visiteurs et lui a redonné son ancien nom : Fort Altena.
