Fort Altena is in 1847 gebouwd en maakt deel uit van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Omdat strategische locaties en zwakke plekken in de linie die niet onder water konden worden gezet extra beschermd moesten worden, werd hier Fort Altena gebouwd, onder meer om de weg Breda - Gorinchem en de Uppelse Dijk te kunnen afsluiten. Er hebben nooit gevechten plaatsgevonden. Sinds 2003 is het fort eigendom van het Brabants Landschap. Die maakte het toegankelijk voor bezoekers en gaf het zijn oude naam terug: Fort Altena.
