La porte a été construite vers 1350 comme partie d'un mur d'enceinte en pierre avec fossé. Avec l'extension de la forteresse en 1484, la porte se retrouve à l'intérieur des murs de la ville. De ce fait, elle perd sa fonction d'entrée et de fortification. Entre-temps, la porte est déjà devenue une prison depuis un certain temps, ce qui lui évite d'être démolie. Jusqu'en 1925, la porte est encore utilisée comme prison.
En 2015, la Porte de la Prison a été restaurée et réaménagée, permettant de mieux vivre les histoires de la porte et de ses habitants. Depuis juillet 2015, la Porte de la Prison est également un poste avancé du palais municipal et du musée Markiezenhof.
