La confiserie 'De Betuwe' cherchait en 1935 de nouvelles possibilités de promotion pour ses produits. Ainsi, le petit bonhomme avec un gros corps de framboise et des bras et des jambes en baies rouges a été imaginé. Sur le sol natal de Flipje, à la Grotebrugse Grintweg où se trouvaient les complexes de la confiserie 'De Betuwe', se trouve désormais un quartier résidentiel complet. La statuette de Flipje a été réalisée par la sculptrice utrechtoise Else Rignalda et a été dévoilée en 1993. Flipje porte des vêtements différents lors d'événements spéciaux. La figurine a déjà plusieurs costumes.
