La fábrica de mermelada ‘De Betuwe’ buscó en 1935 nuevas oportunidades de promoción para sus productos. Así se inventó el muñequito con un cuerpo grueso de frambuesa y brazos y piernas de grosellas rojas. En la tierra natal de Flipje, en la Grotebrugse Grintweg donde se encontraba el complejo de la fábrica de mermelada ‘De Betuwe’, ahora hay un barrio completo. La figura de Flipje fue creada por la escultora de Utrecht Else Rignalda y fue inaugurada en 1993. Flipje lleva ropa diferente en eventos especiales. El muñequito ya tiene varios trajes.
