La fabbrica di marmellate ‘De Betuwe’ cercava nel 1935 nuove opportunità promozionali per i suoi prodotti. Così è stato inventato il personaggio con un grosso corpo di lampone e braccia e gambe di ribes rosso. Sulla terra natale di Flipje, lungo la Grotebrugse Grintweg dove sorgeva il complesso della fabbrica di marmellate ‘De Betuwe’, ora c'è un'intera zona residenziale. La statuina di Flipje è stata realizzata dalla scultrice di Utrecht Else Rignalda ed è stata inaugurata nel 1993. Flipje indossa abiti diversi in occasioni speciali.
