À la rotonde où la Almersdorperweg et la Westfriese Omringdijk se croisent, Almersdorp aurait dû se trouver au Moyen Âge. Après la dévastatrice inondation de Saint Clément en 1334, une partie d'Almersdorp a disparu dans les vagues. Le village a été déplacé de plus en plus vers le sud à cause des inondations, pour finalement se retrouver à son dernier emplacement au XVIe siècle. En fin de compte, le village a disparu.
À l'endroit où se trouvait probablement autrefois le centre d'Almersdorp, se dresse maintenant un monument en mémoire du disparu Almersdorp.
L'œuvre d'art, sous la forme d'une église métallique épurée, a été conçue par l'artiste plasticienne Thea van Lier de Hoorn.
