Les premiers croisés s'installèrent au 17ème siècle autour d'Uden. Ils avaient été chassés de cette ville après le Siège de 's-Hertogenbosch et s'étaient alors établis dans le libre Pays de Ravenstein, dont Uden faisait partie. Ils fondèrent entre autres une école de latin, un monastère et une chapelle. Ils étaient également les fondateurs du monastère Maria Refugie, qui fut plus tard vendu aux birgittines de Coudewater. En 1712, ils construisirent une chapelle octogonale à Uden, où selon une légende se trouvait un tilleul avec une statue de Marie. Au début du 20ème siècle, un nouveau complexe fut construit, qui comprenait le monastère et la chapelle des Croisés. Ce complexe fut construit entre 1904 et 1905 selon les plans de Caspar Franssen.
