L'écrivain Frederik Van Eeden a fondé ici sa communauté idéalisée, la colonie Walden, inspirée par un rêve d'une société meilleure qui résonne également dans son récit De kleine Johannes. Van Eeden a acheté le domaine de Cruysbergen près de Bussum pour réaliser son utopie socialiste Walden, une communauté qui représentait une 'véritable communauté' contre les aspects négatifs de l'industrialisation et du matérialisme.
On y trouve maintenant la Villa Cruysbergen, construite en 1919 à l'emplacement de l'ancienne villa Klein-Cruysbergen.
