Il se trouve dans le bâtiment central de l'historique centrale électrique de Massarelos. Le musée, fondé par la Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto, a été inauguré en mai 1992. L'objectif est de préserver un grand nombre de véhicules de tramway.
Le musée du tramway exploite trois lignes muséales pour le service régulier des passagers et une ligne touristique. Des événements culturels y sont également organisés.
