Het bevindt zich in het hoofdkantoor van de historische elektriciteitscentrale van Massarelos. Het museum, opgericht door de Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto, werd in mei 1992 ingewijd. Het doel is om een groot aantal tramvoertuigen te behouden.
Het trammuseum exploiteert drie museumlijnen voor het reguliere passagiersverkeer en een toeristenlijn. In het trammuseum vinden ook culturele evenementen plaats.
