Ilirska Bistrica est une ville historique et une commune du sud-ouest de la Slovénie, située à proximité de la frontiére croate.
L’adjectif ilirska remonte au royaume d'Illyrie, une ancienne entité administrative qui exista sous l’empire d'Autriche entre 1814 et 1849. Il servait à différencier le lieu des autres villes de l'empire portant le nom Bistrica, dont Slovenska Bistrica ou Banská Bystrica .
