Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, ou le Grand Monastère de la Victoire Auspicieuse, est situé en dehors de l'île de la ville, au sud-est d'Ayutthaya, dans le sous-district de Phai Ling. Dans le passé, il portait d'autres noms tels que Wat Pa Kaeo, Wat Chao Phraya Thai et Wat Yai Chaiya Mongkhon. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon est situé dans ou juste à l'extérieur d'une ville ancienne connue sous le nom d'Ayothya.
Il y a des indications que le site était entouré d'un large fossé auparavant. Le monastère était accessible auparavant par Khlong (Pak) Khao San, qui avait sa bouche à Lam Khu Khue Na et Khlong Thanon Tan.
Il semble y avoir des traces d'un ancien baray ou réservoir d'eau près de l'extrémité sud-ouest du monastère. Ainsi, il se pourrait que Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon ait été construit sur un ancien complexe de temples khmers important—en tenant également compte du large fossé, qui représentait pour les Khmers les océans entourant le monde.
