Le comitat était borné par les Carpates au nord, la Tisza et la Latorica au sud, la Laborec à l'ouest. Sa superficie était d'environ 3 230 km2 en 1910. Il confrontait la Galicie autrichienne, et les comitats hongrois de Bereg, Szabolcs et de Zemplin.
Ce comitat est l'un des plus anciens du royaume de Hongrie. Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, il fut intégré dans la Tchécoslovaquie par le traité de Trianon, à l'exception de Záhony et du village de Győröcske qui restèrent en Hongrie .
