La bibliothèque du Congrès assure la fonction de bibliothèque de recherche du Congrès des États-Unis et, de facto, constitue la bibliothèque nationale américaine.
Instituée en 1800, il s'agit de la bibliothèque fédérale la plus ancienne du pays. Elle est divisée en plusieurs bâtiments : Thomas Jefferson Building, John Adams Building, James Madison Memorial Building et le Packard Campus, destiné à la conservation audiovisuelle. Il s'agit de la plus grande bibliothèque au monde en nombre de livres et de références. Sa directrice actuelle est Carla Hayden.
