La ville de Waco est le siège du comté de McLennan, dans l’État du Texas, aux États-Unis. En 2010, sa population comptait 124 805 habitants pour une superficie de 247,4 km2. La population de l'agglomération, dont Waco est la principale ville, était estimée à 268 696 habitants en 2017. Waco est surnommée « le cœur du Texas ».
Jusqu'à sa fondation officielle en 1849, le territoire de l'actuelle cité est peuplé par les Waco , membres de la tribu amérindienne des Wichita. En 1824, Thomas M. Duke explore ce territoire sur ordre de Stephen Fuller Austin . Il y décrit un village paisible composé d'une soixantaine de huttes entourant la grande maison du conseil où se réunissent les dignitaires. Dans les environs, Duke trouve environ 400 acres de terres plantées de maïs, de haricots, de courges et de melons.
