Tot in de 15de eeuw haalt Damme een groot deel van zijn inkomsten uit de stapelrechten. Onder meer gekaakte haring, schoongemaakte en gepekelde haring, moet in Damme worden opgeslagen en verkocht. Eind 16de eeuw kende Damme nog twee haringplaatsen: het Corneliehof aan de Dinsdagmarkt en de latere Zoutkeete in de Vleeshouwersstraat.
Al in 1269 had Damme een eigen drinkwatervoorziening. Via een loden pijp voerde men drinkbaar water aan uit de vijvers van het kasteel van Male. In Damme werd het verdeeld over stadsfonteinen of stadspompen.
