Fohnsdorf è un comune situato nel distretto di Murtal, nella regione austriaca della Stiria, con 7558 abitanti. Il comune appartiene al distretto giudiziario di Judenburg e si trova al confine nord dell'Aichfeld. Fohnsdorf è composto da otto comuni catastali e dieci ripartizioni di censimento. Nel 1114 il luogo è stato menzionato per la prima volta come "Fanestorf" in documenti ufficiali e in seguito è diventato noto per l'estrazione della lignite; il pozzo Wodzicki era con gallerie fino a una profondità di quasi 1200 metri il più profondo sito minerario di lignite al mondo.
