Il Vloetemveld si estende su Snellegem (170 ha) e Zedelgem (110 ha), di cui 113 ha di bosso di dominio e il resto di dominio militare. Un tempo Vloetem era un pezzo di brughiera fangoso e paludoso, di proprietà del conte delle Fiandre. Nel 1296 Gwijde van Dampierre donò la proprietà all'ospedale di San Giovanni di Bruges. Molti secoli dopo, i fratelli dell'ospedale convertirono l'area in terreni agricoli fertili. Una diga doveva fermare l'acqua, in modo che l'area dietro potesse essere coltivata. Davanti alla diga sorsero numerosi stagni, che furono interrati e boscati, principalmente con pini silvestri, tra il 1770 e il 1882. Nel 1796 il Vloetemveld fu trasferito all'OCMW di Brugge. Dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale, la maggior parte fu espropriata dal ministero della Difesa per l'installazione di un deposito di munizioni. Nel 1980, la restante parte fu acquistata da Acque e Foreste.
