Intorno al 1850, Joseph Pierret introdusse la coltivazione del tabacco nella valle del Semois, ad Alle. Anno dopo anno, il mercato si espanse, centinaia di persone ne vivevano. L'intera regione conobbe una nuova fioritura economica. Furono costruiti numerosi essiccatoi per il tabacco. Coltivatori e produttori espandevano l'attività del tabacco in quasi tutti i villaggi. Ma intorno al 1950, la produzione iniziò a diminuire gradualmente. Oggi, nella valle, rimangono solo alcuni coltivatori e produttori.
