Alrededor de 1850, Joseph Pierret introdujo el cultivo del tabaco en el valle de Semois, en Alle. Año tras año, el mercado se expandió, cientos de personas vivieron de ello. Toda la región experimentó un nuevo auge económico. Se construyeron numerosas naves de secado de tabaco. Los cultivadores y fabricantes ampliaron la actividad del tabaco en casi todos los pueblos. Pero alrededor de 1950, la producción fue disminuyendo gradualmente. Hoy en día, solo quedan algunos cultivadores y fabricantes en todo el valle.
