Negli anni 1580 l'esercito del re di Spagna riconquistò i Paesi Bassi meridionali ribelli. Ma alcune città continuarono a opporre resistenza. Di quelle sacche ribelli, Oostende era la più nota. Dalla cittadina costiera, corsari e gruppi di soldati si avventuravano nel profondo dell'entroterra fiammingo per saccheggiare e imporre stime mensili, le cosiddette 'contribuzioni', ai villaggi. Oostende acquisì rapidamente la reputazione di essere un grave 'cancro'.
