In den 1580er Jahren eroberte das Heer des spanischen Königs die aufständischen Zuidelijke Nederlanden zurück. Doch einige Städte leisteten weiterhin Widerstand. Von diesen widerspenstigen Enklaven war Oostende die berüchtigsten. Aus der Küstenstadt zogen Freibeuter und Gruppen von Soldaten tief ins flämische Binnenland, um dort zu plündern und monatliche Abgaben, die sogenannten ‚Beiträge‘, von den Dörfern zu erheben. Oostende erhielt bald den Spitznamen, ein schlimmer ‚Krebsgeschwür‘ zu sein.
