In de jaren 1580 heroverde het leger van de Spaanse koning de opstandige Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Maar enkele steden bleven weerstand bieden. Van die weerspannige enclaves was Oostende de meest beruchte. Vanuit het kuststadje trokken vrijbuiters en groepjes soldaten diep het Vlaamse binnenland in om er te roven en maandelijkse schattingen, de zogenaamde ‘contributies’, op te leggen aan de dorpen. Oostende kreeg al snel de naam een kwalijke ‘cancker’ te zijn.
