Zonnegem è un paese nella provincia belga di Fiandra Orientale ed è una frazione di Sint-Lievens-Houtem. Il villaggio si trova nella regione del Dender. Il diritto patronale della chiesa era in possesso dell'Abbazia di Drongen. Solo dopo il 1836 arrivò un parroco nominato dal vescovo. Nel 1817 Zonnegem divenne un comune autonomo. Per molto tempo Zonnegem fu orientata all'agricoltura e accanto ad essa, la lavorazione della fibra di lino, la filatura e la tessitura erano le attività artigianali. Un laboratorio di confezione e un birrificio erano le uniche attività industriali. Dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, molte persone iniziarono a lavorare come pendolari a Bruxelles o ad Aalst.
