Con la fioritura del turismo sulla costa alla fine del XIX secolo, emerse anche la necessità di avere più acqua potabile. Middelkerke scavò un pozzo profondo 9 metri nel suo giardino e vi immerse un serbatoio d'acqua in cemento che sarebbe stato riempito con 500m³ d'acqua. Tuttavia, non si è mai arrivati a tanto... L'acqua sotterranea in questo terreno paludoso ha sollevato il serbatoio di 213 tonnellate inclinato, e da allora un grosso angolo sporge goffamente dal terreno.
Il Pozzo Ubriaco ha preso il suo nome dal fatto che il visitatore cerca costantemente di mantenere una direzione parallela con i numerosi pilastri inclinati (12°) nella grande sala e con il livello dell'acqua che naturalmente rimane orizzontale, causando così una sensazione di perdita di equilibrio.
