Der an der Küste am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts verursachte auch einen größeren Bedarf an trinkbarem Wasser. Die lokalen Behörden ließen eine 9 Meter tiefe Grube graben, in der sie eine Betonzisterne anbringen ließen, die man mit 500 m³ Wasser füllen würde. Das ist aber nie erfolgt. Durch das Grundwasser in diesem sumpfigen Boden kippte die Zisterne mit einem Gewicht von 213 Tonnen schräg nach oben, und seitdem ragt ein großer Teil aus dem Boden.
Der Dronkenput (der betrunkene Brunnen) hat seinen Namen der Tatsache zu verdanken, dass sich der Besucher immer parallel halten will zu den zahlreichen schrägen Pfeilern (12°) im großen Raum und zum Wasserspiegel, der selbstverständlich ständig flach ist, wodurch er das Gefühl hat, das Gleichgewicht zu verlieren.
