Con el florecimiento del turismo en la costa a finales del siglo XIX, también surgió la necesidad de más agua potable. Middelkerke excavó en su jardín trasero un pozo de 9 metros de profundidad y hundió en él un reservorio de agua de hormigón que se llenaría con 500m³ de agua. Eso nunca llegó a suceder... Las aguas subterráneas en este suelo pantanoso empujaron el reservorio de 213 toneladas hacia arriba, y desde entonces una gran esquina sobresale torpemente del suelo.
El Pozo Borracho recibió su nombre porque el visitante siempre quiere mantenerse paralelo a los numerosos pilares inclinados (12°) en el gran espacio y a la superficie del agua que, por supuesto, permanece plana, lo que provoca una sensación de pérdida de equilibrio.
