La stazione di Essen è, vista da Anversa, l'ultima stazione ferroviaria lungo la linea 12 prima del confine olandese e la stazione ferroviaria più a nord del Belgio. La stazione di Essen era un tempo il principale punto di confine tra Belgio e Paesi Bassi. Poiché qui venivano svolte le formalità doganali per il traffico transfrontaliero, ci sono molte tracce di rientro.
