Hamme avrebbe avuto la prima chiesa in pietra in queste contrade. Si parlava già di ciò prima del X secolo. A causa dell'aumento della popolazione, nel 1740 si decise di ricostruire e ampliare completamente la vecchia chiesa. Questa chiesa, di design neoclassico, è stata progettata dal monaco agostiniano di Dendermonde Thomas Laureyns.
Il nome insolito di Sint-Pietersbanden si riferisce alla storia della liberazione dell'apostolo Pietro. Era stato catturato e incatenato da Erode. Secondo la leggenda, una notte fu svegliato da un angelo che gli disse di seguirlo nonostante le catene. Miracolosamente, le catene si spezzarono e la porta della prigione sicura si aprì da sola.
