"Mamma aveva preso un abbonamento per tutta la famiglia al teatro fiammingo, il Minard-schouwburg, in altre parole da Fauconnier. Ogni domenica e martedì ci andavamo con una vigilante della signora Van Keulebroeck, locataria di Slijpstraat (...). La commedia iniziava alle 6 e alle 8 c'era la pausa. Poi andavamo nel foyer e cenavamo con bistecca e patate fritte con salsa piccante, o con spezzatino, che era in realtà la specialità del ristorante. Bevevamo birra flakontjes. Lì incontravamo molte conoscenze e amici."
