Per il delizioso castello, i Signori di Diest, che nel medioevo regnavano sulla città e sui suoi dintorni, scelsero un luogo strategico, da allora conosciuto come il tumulo del castello. Dopo la rivoluzione francese, il dominio passò in mani private, dopo di che l'ultimo proprietario Henri Verstappen lo donò nel 1939 alla città di Diest con il desiderio esplicito di renderlo accessibile a tutti i cittadini. Henri Verstappen ricevette il monumento d'ingresso perché donò la Warande alla città di Diest.
